The Obstacle is the Way

"Those things that hurt, instruct." -Benjamin Franklin

Today I wanted to start a little differently than normal. Today's blurb is based on two quotes I heard this week that both kind of relate to each other. When we dissect these two quotes they tell us something very similar. They tell us that when you look at something that is an obstacle, or something that may hurt, it is what will make us stronger and better.

Why am I telling you this? It is something I tell a lot of my first-time guests. When I am consulting with a new guest, I want to ask as many questions as possible. I want to make sure that I truly understand what they are asking for and what they want and need out of a hair service. A lot of times their response was " I have never been asked so many questions" or "I haven't actually thought about my hair that way." Usually, my follow up question is if they are nervous and a lot of times the answer is yes. I always say "If you aren't uncomfortable you aren't growing." There is a reason you are in my chair and there is a reason that you are coming to me. You didn't like what the last person was doing and you needed a change. If I kept doing what the last hairstylist was doing, you'd end up with the same thing. I Want all my clients to get a little uncomfortable with the questions so we can get to the root of the issue. I am the obstacle and I am also the path to an amazing haircut.

These quotes not only spoke to me on a professional level they also talked to me on a personal level. For the last 7 years, I have just been doing hair to do hair and make a paycheck. 2019 was the year I decided to start looking at my career more as an art form as well as a job. This year I am entering in the Behind The Chair  One Shot Hair Awards. I wanted to enter last year but my boss and owner had put it in my mind that so many people enter and I will never be chosen so why even try. There it was, my obstacle, the thing that caused pain. I knew at that moment that I would prove her wrong. This year I am stepping out of my comfort zone to do something I have never done before. I am putting myself out there and entering in this competition and it has already made me a better stylist. If you want to follow along with my journey I invite you to follow my Instagram @jacobnormanhair.

Now you know my story and my struggles, its time for your story. Today I challenge each and every one of you to step out of your comfort zone, do something new.
